What does neutering/spaying do to a dog?

Neutering means surgically removing the testicles from a male dog. Spaying means surgically removing the ovaries and uterus from a female dog.

How old should a dog be before they are neutered/spayed?

We recommend getting your dog spayed at 6 months of age and neutered between 9 and 11 months of age, depending on size and breed. For larger breed male dogs it is recommended to wait until the dog is closer to 1 year of age. A veterinarian can give you a more exact recommended age for the surgery during a puppy exam or vaccine appointment.
